Salman Rushdie's letter to Rajiv Gandhi in 1988, after the Satanic Verses was banned in India -

Dear Rajiv Gandhi - "In 1988 a rising novelist penned an open letter to then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in The New York Times, after his book was banned in India.

“Apparently,” he wrote, “my book is not deemed blasphemous or objectionable in itself, but is being proscribed for, so to speak, its own good!”"
