Most of the newspapers have focussed on the war of words on the state of the economy. "Debate over economy gets personal" writes The Indian Express. The DNA says "Jaitley calls Sinha job applicant at 80". The Pioneer leads with the headline, "Sinha acting in tandem with PC Chidambaram): (says) FM"
Another story featured prominently in many papers is the resistance to the proposed Delhi Metro fare hike. The Hindustan Times headlines "Kejri(wal) wants Metro fare hike rollback".
The DNA in an exclusive story expects the number of annual GST statements to be filed to be reduced from 36 to 12. The paper surmises that the decision is likely at the GST council meeting on October 6.
The Asian Age writes that the Prime Minister has asked the Niti Aayog to take immediate steps to revive private funding in the big-ticket sectors. Niti Aayog will seek the opinion of ministries to give PPP models a greater push to boost the economy.

The Times of India says "Collegium did flip flop on Justice Patel's transfer". The paper reports that the SC collegium had initially decided to transfer Justice Patel to Bombay HC, but then suddenly changed its mind and shifted him to Allahabad HC instead.
In an ironic story, The Hindu reports that six men arrested for selling liquor by Bihar police escaped as the guards dozed off after consuming the seized liquor.
The Statesman informs us that Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to introduce electric taxis to reduce vehicular emissions. Hopefully other states will follow suit.

The Hindu quotes Ms Swaraj as saying "Pak repeatedly rejected offers of talks".
The second day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two day visit to Varanasi is prominently covered in the press. The Pioneer quotes the Prime Minster as saying in a public meeting "Country first, votes later ; anti graft fight will continue". Reporting on his other activities in the city, the Hindustan Times states "PM Modi watches live surgery on bull".
In the face of worrying economic numbers, the Hindustan Times reports, "Centre readies booster dose to rev up economy; Thrust on MSME, infra, banks and job creation".
Highlighting the growing economic cooperation between India and Japan  the Hindu in a special story reports "Japan to fund mass rapid transit systems in Gujarat, Haryana ; 4.5 billion soft loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency to boost 100 billion dollar Delhi - Mumbai Industrial Corridor project".

The Hindu, in its lead story, writes "BJP states tell police to push back Rohingya". The Statesman writes "Sushma calls Bangladesh PM, expresses solidarity over its refugee crisis". Writing on the same subject, The Asian Age writes "Centre will file affidavit in SC over Rohingyas on Monday" while the Times of India reports "NHRC likely to fight for Rohingya in SC".
Another story featured prominently across newspapers is that of Centre's move to soon link Aadhar with Driving licenses to check the menace of multiple licensing.
After the Ghazipur landfill disaster, the Mail Today writes "Delhi to go high-tech in War on Filth". The paper says that the Centre has approved 300 crore rupee plan to fight the waste management crisis in the city with automated little pickers, compactors, super-suckers and sweeping gadgets.
In more alarming news of global warming, The DNA reports that Glaciers in Asia are set to shrink by 33% by the end of this century.

The Hindustan Times lead headline reads, "BRICS spells out concern over Pak terrorist groups". The paper highlights the bracketing of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad with global terror groups Islamic State and Al-Qaeda as a significant diplomatic win for India. "BRICS nails Pak terror groups", is how The Pioneer headline describes it.
Another story prominently featured on many front pages is the Farrukhabad hospital tragedy. "Again! 49 children gasp to death in UP", exclaims the DNA headline. The paper reports that doctors in Farrukhabad went on a flash strike after the UP government transferred 3 top officials yesterday.

The Reserve Bank of India's annual report for 2016-17 claiming that 99 percent of banned notes are back with it makes for front page news in most of the dailies this morning. The Financial Express quotes RBI as saying "Almost all banned notes back". The report further says that 15.28 lakh crore of notes came in versus 15.44 lakh crore rupees in the system before demonetisation.
Referring to the announcement of an extensive army overhaul, Hindustan Times writes "Nod to military reforms: More troops for combat". The paper informs that 65 of Shekatkar panel suggestions to be implemented: changes to be carried out by 2019-end.
Most of the papers take note of the Union Cabinet approving an ordinance enabling the government to raise the goods and services tax (GST) cess on medium to large cars and SUVs to 25% from 15%.
