World Cup, the acid test for 50-overs cricket

World Cup, the acid test for 50-overs cricket: "In an unusually frank admission, tournament director Ratnakar Shetty recently conceded that the format for the World Cup that starts next Saturday had been designed to give the top teams the best chance of qualifying for the knockout stage.
The early exit of India and Pakistan from the 2007 World Cup had cost the sponsors, broadcasters, West Indies Cricket Board and tour operators a lot of money and the organizers wanted to “give all the top teams a chance to compete” at this year’s event, Shetty said."
