NEWSPAPERS HEADLINES
The Dussehra festivites turning into a horrific tragedy in Amritsar dominate top front page newspaper headlines today.
"Dussehra turns tragic" headlines the Pioneer.  The paper writes "Amritsar revellers mowed down by tracks by speeding trains while watching Ravan dahan". The Hindu writes "61 dead as train mows down Dussehra crowd in Amristar".  The Tribune informs us that permission to burn the effigies near the railway tracks was not sought.
The newspapers have also widely covered the continued tension in Kerala's Sabarimala Temple as thousands of protestors stood guard to stop women from entering the shrine. The Times of India writes "Just 500 meters from Sabrimala, two women return on priest's threat to shut shrine". The paper adds - 'Facing difficulty in implementing order, Temple Board to tell Supreme Court'.
Shifting focus to another shrine, the Times of India writes "Seven Lakh visit Kedarnath, highest in four decades".
Quoting from the Prime Minister's speech at an event in Shirdi yesterday, a headline in The Hindustan Times reads "NDA built 12.5 million homes for poor in 4 years says Modi". In an attempt to better prospects in the forthcoming assemply polls, the Times of India speculates "BJP may drop over half of its MLAs in Raj to counter anti-incumbency".
Several papers also highlight China's GDP growing at its slowest pace since 2009. ''Global crisis sinks China growth to its lowest since 2009'' headlines the Hindustan Times.
''India's 1st ATM for bitcoins launched'' headlines the Times of India. The paper says the first ATM for Indians to buy and sell bitcoins has been installed in a mall in Bengaluru by the Cryptocurrency exchange Unocoin.
And finally, giving us a wonderful example of an eco-friendly visarjan, the Times of India has photographed the Chitranjan Park's puja samiti in New Delhi immersing the Durga idol in a tank, letting it dissolve completely before disposing of the material. That's called leading by example!
