Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, India, currently holds the Guinness World Record for the highest rainfall in a single calendar month.

Cherrapunji (officially known as Sohra) in Meghalaya, India, currently holds the Guinness World Record for the highest rainfall in a single calendar month.

Record Details

  • The Record: In July 1861, the town recorded a staggering 9,300 mm (366 inches) of rain. While Britannica notes a minor variance of 9,296 mm, the core figure is widely accepted and verified by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

  • Annual Record: This period also contributed to an all-time annual record. Between August 1860 and July 1861, Cherrapunji received a total of 26,471 mm of rain.

Geographical Context The region's extreme monsoon intensity is due to its unique location on the windward side of the Khasi Hills. Here, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are forced upward (orographic lift), causing massive precipitation. To date, no higher monthly total has been officially recorded anywhere on Earth.
