NEWSPAPERS HEADLINES
The much awaited first verdict in the Dec 16, 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case is covered extensively by the Press." Travesty" writes Mail Today, "Dec 16 teen rapist gets away with Murder ". "Worst 16/12 brute gets away with 3 years" - headlines Hindustan Times. The victim's family said they will appeal against the judgment writes the Sunday Express.
The other big story is of the imminent though 'limited' US strike on Syria. The Asian Age writes that the US has five cruise - missile equipped destroyers in the region. France is also expected to join the US strike, adds the paper.
Mail Today writes that Yasin Bhatkal, the arrested operative head of the Indian Mujahideen in India - was arranging funds for terror outfits from New Jersey in the US. This has been revealed in Bhatkal's letters intercepted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and handed over to Indian intelligence agencies.
Business Line of The Hindu quotes Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma as saying that economic growth will bounce back to 5.5 % soon and that exports will do well in the next quarter.
Times of India writes "Fuel prices hiked, but govt planning steeper increase".
And finally Times of India questions - "what's in a name ? Plenty". Quoting film maker Prakash Jha, the paper writes, the whole notion of political leadership for Mahatma Gandhi revolved around the central premise of 'service' and that a politician was a 'sewak'. Would a change in nomenclature such as "Pradhan Sewak" instead of "Prime Minister" bring about a change in the way politicians perceive their role and serve the people of India better?
