The Hindu Business Line : The degrees of separation

The Hindu Business Line : The degrees of separation: "In 1952, when Potti Sriramulu fasted unto death for a State of the Andhra people, Jawaharlal Nehru quickly agreed to the linguistic organisation of States, a principle he was not at all in favour of. After arduous efforts at getting the princely States to join the newly created nation, India's first prime minister reckoned the need to consolidate on those gains an absolute necessity.

The people of Andhra and the rest of the country did not think that way; their idea of India meshed into a working principle of regionalism, leading to the creation of new States and the division of powers between Centre and States that gave to the Constitution its first taste of federalism."
