The ancient mathematician who is credited with designing weapons using mirrors to focus sunlight to set enemy ships on fire is Archimedes. This device is often referred to as Archimedes' heat ray or death ray. According to historical accounts, during the Siege of Syracuse around 213–212 BC, Archimedes purportedly used mirrors, possibly bronze, to concentrate sunlight onto Roman ships, causing them to catch fire. Although this story is a popular legend and there is no contemporary or surviving work of Archimedes that describes the device, the idea has been passed down since ancient times and has been subject to various experiments and recreations to test its plausibility.
