Justice Surya Kant, who rose from a middle-class family in Hisar, was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on November 24, 2025, with a tenure lasting until February 9, 2027.
His judicial record includes landmark rulings on the Article 370 abrogation, the Pegasus spyware case, and electoral roll revisions.
CJI Kant's top priorities are addressing the Supreme Court's backlog of nearly 90,000 pending cases and improving judicial efficiency, strongly advocating for the use of mediation and resolving cases at lower courts to ease the burden on the apex court.
