Most newspapers this morning have front page photograph of Novak Djokovic, with his Australian Open Tennis trophy, as well as photographs of the Medium range ballistic missile that India successfully test fired from an underwater platform.

The Hindustan Times writes that the North East is all set to be India's next food bowl. According to the paper, India has raised the annual funding for a green revolution in the Eastern India from 400 crore rupees to a 1000 crore rupees. The North East with its fertile soil and abundant rainfall could be the next agricultural power house, as overall the Eastern States have produced 7 million more tons of rice and Nagaland and Manipur alone achieved a farm output of nearly 1 million tons.

The Indian Express reports that with the radiation scare leading to a clampdown on a mobile tower installation, there are rising instances of calls dropping in Mumbai and Delhi but the more serious worry is that weaker signals are forcing mobile handset manufacturers to compensate by ramping up transmission power, resulting in higher radiation exposure for the users from the phone itself.

At least 232 people were killed in a nightclub fire in Southern Brazil on Sunday. About 500 people were inside the club when the fire broke. Mail Today, the Hindustan Times and most other paper have covered this story with photographs.

The Sunday Statesman reports that in the biggest identity theft scam in the US history, 111 persons, including 13 Indians have been charged for stealing credit card data of thousand of customers to buy high end products worth over 13 million dollars.

The Sunday Times in its lead story reports 'Ministers go Secy-less, Navratana PSU's headless - series of scam during UPA-II hits decision making.''

In the Delhi High Court blast case, the Hindustan Times reports "Now, NIA suspects 16 year old" adding that 2 days after arresting a 23 year old Kashmiri preparing for his MBBS at Dhaka, the NIA suspects his 16 years old brother to be involved as well, making him possibly the youngest suspect in a major attack in the country.

The Times of India and the Hindu carry a fascinating story on the discovery of a new planet. The Times of India reports calls it "A key moment in history" reports the Hindu, adding that scientists are excited about the possibility of life on this newly discovered planet.
"Congress Telangana-decision likely by November 5th, headlines the Asian Age. Quoting AICC sources, the paper writes that a Congress Working Committee meeting will be convened after Diwali to formalise the party's stand, to be followed by discussion with key Congress allies on the issue. After that, all-party meetings will be held at National and State levels, to involve all political parties to obtain their views.
"New Laws to get around RTI Act," is the top Hindustan Times headline. The paper writes that India's transparency law - The Right to Informaction Act - will not change but the Government wants to restrict its applicability in some areas of sports and nuclear safety, through other laws.
"Maoists hit back at Mamata, reject deal," reports the Asian Age. The Maoists have rejected the Chief Minister's 7-day ultimatum to give up violence, and instead, are demanding the release of all its political prisoners, and withdrawl of the joint forces from Jungle Mahal before any talks with the Government.
The Mail Today reports the Chief Election Commissioner Mr. S.Y. Qureshi as saying that electoral reforms like 'right to reject' and 'right to recall' would be difficult to implement in a country the size of India. He said our main fear is that if we start rejecting all candidates, we will have another election, with people complaining about election fatigue.
The Times of India reports that construction of highways, which had dipped to dismal levels in the past few years, has picked up pace, and official data shows that 11 kilometeres of roads are being added, everyday.

Referring to the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, the King of Bhutan, The Times of India captions his photograph at the parade with the remark "King of happiness, spreads warmth in Delhi".
On a sombre note the Hindustan Times reports "On R-Day, Delhi sees rerun of rape protests, calls for action", while the Asian Age adds "Freedom Parade" to reclaim the Republic".
The Indian Express reports "In 3 weeks, Delhi's six fast track courts get 500 rape cases" and adds "Many more in queue wait for completion of probe, remand".
In a significant story, the Indian Express reports that Pakistani Lt. General Shahid Aziz, heading an ISI cell during the 1999 Kargil conflict, has admitted in a newspaper article that only regular troops of the Pakistan Army took part in the Kargil conflict with India in 1999 and not Mujahideen fighters as claimed by Islamabad. He also adds that the intrusion was an "Unsound military plan based on invalid assumption" and that there was a "cover up".

The news stories on Justice Verma Committee's detailed roadmap of steps the Centre and States should take to prevent crimes against women, and Mr. Rajnath Singh taking charge as BJP President, appear prominently on the front pages of the day's papers. The Hindu reports that "Verma panel says no to death penalty". A Hindustan Times headline reads, "Under new chief, BJP puts fight on hold, plans for 2014".

An interesting political drama unfolded in Bangalore yesterday when two Ministers and 11 MLAs, loyal to former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, submitted their papers, in order to topple the Jaddish Shetter-led BJP Government in Karnataka, reports The Pioneer.

"Aadhaar now a must for New Provident Fund Accounts" under that headline The Indian Express reports that those entering the formal sector work force will now have to get a UID number before they enroll with the Employee Provident Fund.

AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi formally assumed office on Wednesday, says The Asian Age, and adds that he strongly pitched for 'Positive Politics', and asserted that with a combination of the youth and the experience Congress can become an 'Instrument of Change'.

'Mobile charges go up', says The Statesman. Leading operators Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular announced a 30 per cent hike. "Pay more, talk less", writes The Business Standard.

And finally, in a health alert, citing a Taiwan study The Times of India informs us that Melamine, a chemical that sickened and killed babies in China in the past when it tainted baby food, can also leach off Melamine tableware into food and cause kidney stones. The paper adds that Melamine tableware may release large amounts of the chemical when used to serve food at high temperatures.

Mail Today's report says that in a speech reminiscent of his father Rajiv Gandhi's plans to rid Congress of power brokers and vested interests, Rahul Gandhi put the party's old guard on notice with the forceful plea to change the mindset of the party and for systemic changes in governance.

'Sonia cites Nirbhaya, pledges quota for women in police', under that headline, the Times of India writes that the Congress Chief has said Nirbhaya's death would not go in vain, and described the gang rape victim as a symbol of aspiration India, and backed reservations for women in the government at all levels including in the police.

Hindustan Times reports that the Centre is planning a comprehensive new law for juveniles, which will ensure tougher punishments for delinquents involved in heinous crimes such as rape.

The Hindu says that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is planning to have a single emergency response number, on the lines of America's 911, for any emergency like police, fire or ambulance. The paper adds that this proposed helpline could be reached by landline, GSM or CDMA.

Hindustan Times says that in a bid to encourage higher enrollment for Aadhaar number, the Finance Ministry has asked all public sector and rural banks to expedite setting up of biometric cash dispensers where your fingerprint or eye scan may be enough to withdraw cash from ATMs.

The Hindu writes that India has been staved off being relegated to junk bond status as International credit rating agency Moody's has reaffirmed India's rating at BAA3 and the outlook as stable.

And finally, under the headline, 'Starry night: Filmfare awards the brightest', the Times of India reports that in the dazzling Filmfare Awards 2012 held in Mumbai, Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan walked away with the Best Actor award in a leading role for their performances in the films Barfi and Kahaani. Under the headline, "Sonia backs reforms as Rahul dominates show", Hindustan Times writes that Sonia Gandhi gave her preion for the 2014 polls: Focus on youth, inclusive growth and alliances.

Under the headline, "Gravity of crime or age of accused? SC to examine" The Indian Express writes that Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar has said that Delhi Police was in favour of amending the law to reduce the age of juvenility from the existing 18 to 16 years.

"Sabarmati redemption: 31 degrees for jailbird in 6 years". Under this headline, The Times of India reports that instead of keeping his head low and cursing his fate for his situation, Bhanu Patel, a doctor by profession, obtained 31 educational qualifications while at Sabarmati Jail from 2005 to 2011, thus earning him a place in Unique World Records and Asia Book of Records.

Hindustan Times writes that the Delhi bus rape case which was transferred to a fast track court, will start daily hearings from the 21st of January. Defence lawyers say they have already received soft copies of the chargesheet and related documents.

Hindu Business Line reports "Air India closes booking, grounds all six dreamliners" as Federal Aviation Administration pointing to problem with the battery of dreamliner.

Finance Minister reiterated India's commitment to a Stable Tax Regime, Moderate Tax Rates and a fair mechanism for Dispute Resolution, reports The Hindu.

The Economic Times writes that according to an NGO- Pratham, which focuses on primary education, the "no examination system" has resulted in a decline in learning of basic reading and math skills among rural children in Govt. Primary Schools.

And finally The Times of India tells us that an Indian researcher, 27 year old Mahaveer Golechha has been selected for an award for his work on a drug to cure Alzheimer's. He has been recognized for his outstanding research on 'Naringin' found in grape fruit and other citrus fruit which contains anti-Alzheimer properties.

In a related story, The Pioneer reports that exposing the white lies of the Pakistani military establishment, Indian Army has released pictures of landmines that were reportedly planted by Pakistani troops inside the Indian territory along the LOC.

After the the BCCI has apprised the International Cricket Council of the situation prevailing in India following the killing of two Indian soldiers by the Pakistani Army, and after the Mumbai Cricket Association made it clear that it would be difficult to host the matches involving a Pakistani team in the city, the ICC may have to announce a new venue for the matches of the upcoming Women's Cricket World Cup, says The Pioneer.

The Statesman writes that one month after the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a Delhi bus, protesters gathered yesterday at Jantar Mantar in remembrance of the braveheart.

'Litigation explosion ahead', under that headline The Pioneer writes that the likelihood of 15 crore cases in the year 2040 warrants speedy judicial reforms as underlined by the National Court Management System of the Supreme Court.

The Indian Express reports that the cabinet meeting is set to consider the Petroleum Ministry's proposals to increase diesel, cooking gas and kerosene prices, a move the government aims to partly offset by raising the ceiling on the number of subsidized LPG cylinders.

'Aussie breakthrough may offer AIDS cure', reads the headline of a Hindustan Times story which writes that modifying a protein in the HIV virus that causes AIDS will stop it from replicating, thereby protecting people against AIDS.

The Times of India says that the international boxing body AIBA has suspended the Indian Boxing Federation on complaints of manipulations in its organisational elections in September last, as a result of which the Indian boxers will not be able to take part in international events.

And finally, The Times of India has written about the exam evaluation mess in Delhi University after the roll out of the semester system saying that many students have got marks that were more than the maximum possible.

'LPG Cap may be raised to 12', reports The Hindustan Times, reporting that the Government is hoping to substantially negate the political fall out of higher diesel and cooking gas price by doubling the cap on the number of subsidized LPG cylinder from 6 to 12.
The Hindu writes that in the wake of the horrific gang-rape that took place in a moving bus on December 16 in Delhi, the Union Urban Development Ministry has asked all states to ensure that urban transport system including buses, autos and taxis are fitted with intelligent transport systems like cameras and tracking devices.

    Pakistani troops violating the cease fire yet again last evening even as the two sides prepare for a flag meeting of top commanders this afternoon, is a prominent story in the papers - with interesting headlines. 'Pak talks Truce, keeps up Firing', writes the Times of India. 'Hot and Cold along the LoC', headlines the Statesman.

    Regarding the Indian Army's reaction to LoC violations, Hindustan Times reports that the Indian Army Chief is believed to have told his top generals in the border state that the force reserved the right to retaliate at a place and time of its choosing.

    Several newspapers carry colorful photographs of devotees at the Maha Kumbh mela and processions of sadhus in Allahabad. The Times of India caption reads, 'Sadhu jumps into knee-deep water at the Sangam'.

    The Tribune reports that 22 sarpanches and panches from the north Kashmir area of Sopore belonging to three panchayat blocks resigned yesterday, following militant attacks on a sarpanch and a woman panch from the same area in the past few days.

Asian Age and Mail Today write that the wife of Lance Naik Hemraj Singh, who was killed and beheaded by Pakistani troops on January the 8th, has declared a 'hunger strike' along with other family members, until his decapitated head is brought back from Pakistan.
"Women's Laws Top Priority in Budget Session" is an Asian Age headline. The first legislative business of the Budget Session, is set to be the enactment of a Law to provide stringent punishment for crimes against women.
The Hindu reports that the President has rejected the mercy petition of death row convict Saibanna Natikar, convicted for murder of his first wife, followed by murder of his second wife and daughter. This is the second Presidential mercy plea rejection, after Ajmal Kasab.

Continuing tension between India and Pakistan over recent incidents along the Line of Control dominates front page headlines. With Pakistan protesting the killing of a soldier in firing from the Indian side, the Times of India reports the official Indian position as saying" Pak soldiers killing response to provocation". The comments of Hafiz Saeed,the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, that violence in Kashmir could get ugly are highlighted in the Asian Age, the Hindustan Times and the Times of India.
The Supreme Court's observations on the lack of safety for women in the capital are prominently noticed in the press. "Safety has to come back to Capital" reports the Hindu on its front page. The Hindustan Times informs that the Justice Verma panel that was set up to review rape laws has received more than 60,000 suggestions.
The government's defence of a controversial clause in the Information Technology Act which was invoked to arrest two young girls in Maharashtra for their Facebook posts is prominently noticed. "Section 66A of IT act not bad in law: Centre to Supreme Court" reports the Indian Express. The Statesman quotes the Centre as saying "IT Act does not curb freedom of expression".
The Statesman carries an interesting front page story on how a Bangladeshi man arrested in Mumbai by the Immigration Branch of the police revealed that he had obtained a UID Aadhar card by paying a bribe of 2500 rupees.

The story of the aftermath of the sneak attack from across the LOC by Pakistan that left two Indian jawans mutilated, and strained the India Pakistan relations severely, has been prominently covered by all prominent newspapers of their front pages. The Times of India says that border truce violations have almost doubled in 2012.
The Asian Age reports that twenty five days after the Delhi gang rape and subsequent death of a 23 year old paramedic student, the Delhi Government is working on a recommendation of making auto-rickshaw kiosks on the pattern of taxi kiosks so that commuters could get auto-rickshaws round the clock.

Under the caption "Insulin code out, say bye to needles", The Times of India says that in a major breakthrough that could help millions of diabetics, Australian researchers have solved a 20-year-old mystery on how Insulin works at the molecular level that may soon enable diabetics to get rid of daily injections.
"Jayashri's Pi lullaby in race for Oscar". Under this headline, The Indian Express says that the lilting, tender song in Tamil called "Pi's Lullaby", in the movie "Life of Pi" which has been nominated in 11 categories, is in the race for the Best Music (Original Song) at the Oscars 2013.

"Train pain: Now, pay a lot more for travel". Under that headline, Hindustan Times reports that the rail fare hike announced one and a half month's before the presentation of the rail budget will keep the rail budget politically palatable.
The Times of India reports that Haryana's khaps have formed a 17-member panel to appear before the Supreme Court to ask for Lok Adalat status for them and seek amendments to the Hindu Marriage Act to accommodate the social customs of the region which prohibit same-gotra marriages.
Hindustan Times reports that hate speech accused MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi has been slapped with charges of sedition.
The Pioneer reports that the Central Vigilance Committee on Public Distribution System has suggested that the state governments must constitute Civil Supplies Corporation to directly lift food grains and supply them to fair price shops which should be managed by cooperative societies and not private individuals.

The killing of two Indian jawans by Pakistani soldiers after crossing over the Line of Control into Jammu and Kashmir dominates front page headlines in all the papers today.

The ordering of a probe by the Ministry of Home Affairs into alleged lapses by the Delhi Police and the Safdarjung Hospital in the recent gangrape case in Delhi is prominently noticed. "MHA-appointed officer to probe allegations of police lapses," reports the Hindustan Times.

Violence between CPM and Trinamool Congress workers as the CPM cadre were proceeding for a rally in the South 24 Parganas District of West Bengal gets wide attention. "5 CPM workers injured as TMC attacks rally", reports the Times of India.

The Asian Age, the Pioneer and the Times of India reveal that a member of the Dental Council of India has been arrested by the CBI for accepting a bribe from a private college in Tamil Nadu for granting approval to start a postgraduate dental course.

Many papers write about possible government interventions which could have an impact on the poor and marginal sections of the population. In a special front page story the Asian Age reports that the government is preparing to enact a law to constitute an equal opportunity commission to look into issues related to minorities, particularly Muslims. The Indian Express writes, "Government plans a 66 per cent hike in housing aid to BPL families".

The Finance Ministry's assertion that it was not worried about the threat of a ratings downgrade by global agencies such as Fitch is highlighted by the Hindu.

"E-tagging to keep jumbos off killer tracks", under that headline the Pioneer reports that in the wake of trains mowing down nine elephants in Odisha and West Bengal in the recent past, the Ministries of Railways and Environment decided that trains would have to reduce speed when passing through designated, identified vulnerable patches of forests to avoid further deaths of wildlife.

And finally, The Hindustan Times reports that Indian scientist Sandip Kumar Chakrabarti along with Italian Remo Ruffin has become the first to record the entire 'birth cry' that is the huge amounts of gamma radiation emission just after the formation of a black hole, and that earlier attempts at recording such events were never complete.

'Public ire mounts, protesters brave tear gas and water cannons', writes the Tribune. 'Welcome to Raisina Hell', headlines Hindustan Times. 'Government sees anger, Hints at death sentence', reports the Asian Age.
On the Center's commitment to further strengthen the banking system, Business Line, quoting Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, writes, the centre will infuse over 15 thousand crore rupee new capital before March 2013, for consolidation of the banking system. He said, China has three of the worlds 20 largest banks, and India has none.
On the upcoming India-Pak series, Hindustan Times writes, the cricket series has a lot more riding on it than just pride. For starters, this is the first time Pakistan will play India following the Mumbai terror attacks, and Pakistani cricket officials hope that a successful trip and peace on the political front can pave the way for a full fledged series.

Hindustan Times reports that in a rare public statement by a sitting Supreme Court judge, Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra slammed it as an attack on dignity of women. The paper also says that for the first time since the fateful night, the 23 year old victim met her male friend who suffered serious injuries while trying to protect her. Under the headline "India united in protest", The Pioneer writes that agitators marched to Rashtrapati Bhawan and demanded speedy justice to the rape victim.
Newspapers have also reported on their front pages the story of CBI chargesheet against telecom firms Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Vodafone Mobile and former telecom secretary Shyamal Ghosh, accusing them of criminal conspiracy and misconduct in the allocation of additional spectrum in 2002 when the NDA was in power.
The Tribune and The Statesman write that a Delhi court has decided to frame charges against sacked Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, secretary general Lalit Bhanot and nine others for their alleged involvement in a 90 crore rupee scam.
The Times of India under the headline "Government moots 'Sin' tax on tobacco, liquor, writes that if the health ministry has its way, a 'sin tax' on tobacco and alcohol will fund part of the health budget during the 12th five year plan as also being a part of its plan to fight non-communicable diseases.
Under the headline "Unclear LPG capping norms fuel consumers' woes" The Pioneer reports that the government order fixing the annual cap of six LPG cylinders per household came into effect in September but the gas agencies in NCR are telling consumers that the cap is effective April last.
And finally, The Hindu reports under the headline "Mayan 'doomsday' wave sweeps the world but luckily no casualties" that diehard doomsayers hunkered down to await the apocalypse on Friday, but most took a light-hearted view of the Mayan prophesy of world's destruction.

"Modi boards Rajdhani Express", Victory speech hints at national ambitions, writes Hindustan Times. "Congress's next big task : Choosing Himachal CM" - Virbhadra is front runner but others are eyeing the post too, writes the Tribune.
India and ASEAN yesterday agreeing to elevate their relations to Strategic Partnership level, is also covered by the day's papers. The Indian Express writes that Vietnam, furious over Chinese passports showing the South China Sea as part of Chinese waters, seeks ASEAN support to keep Beijing at Bay.
23-year old Delhi rape victim's vital parameters coming within normal, appears in the press. "Rape victim wants culprits punished" reads The Hindu's headline. The Mail Today writes that the main accused in the incident Ram Singh, was remorseless during police interrogation and he said he was taking 'revenge' for her insults.
India winning yesterday's T20 match against England is headlined by Hindustan Times as, "Shorter it gets, the better it is for India". The paper says that Yuvraj Singh first pulled back England picking up 3 wickets, and then smashed 38, to pave the way for India's victory.
The Statesman writes that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is seeking inputs from stakeholders on the tariff for National Roaming services, moving a step closer to providing free roaming by 2013.
Ultra secret talks have been setup in France by it's Government for the Taliban, and all Afghan political factions are to meet for the first time to hold free discussions on neutral territory, writes The Hindu.
And finally, The Times of India reports about a new light bulb that glows on power generated by gravitational pull. Designed by a London based Initiative, this works on a sack of sand pulling a rope through a dynamo which generates electricity to power an LED light bulb, reports the paper.

 With all eyes focussed on the eagerly-awaited results of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh polls, papers of the day analysed different scenarios. Businessline of the Hindu says, 'State Contests, National Consequences', as the outcome will have a major bearing on national politics and the 2014 General Elections.

 Public outrage in the gang rape case continues to grow report the papers. 'Anger rises in city as girl sinks', headlines the Times of India. 'Two admit to gang rape', 'Fifth detained in Bihar', write the Hindu and the Tribune. Government to bear medical expenses of Delhi gangrape victim, writes the Statesman.

 A Samajwadi Party member snatching papers from a Minister while he was presenting the Bill for reservation in promotions in government jobs for SCs and STs , and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's personal intervention, also find prominence in the papers. 'Samajwadi Party MPs snatch Quota Bill, tear it - Sonia fights back', headlines the Indian Express.

 The Times of India reports the Minister of State for Home RPN Singh stating in Rajya Sabha yesterday that as of now, there are no specific inputs to say that terrorists are investing in share and stock markets, however, there are some transactions, suspected to be linked to financing of terrorism.

 The Financial Express reports that the Government's ambitious welfare programme Direct Cash Transfer's pilots have borne fruit in several parts of the country, with beneficiaries in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra buying ration supplies, and receiving pensions and scholarships, using the Online Authentication System.

And finally, the Times of India informs us that scientists may progress to human cloning within half a century, according to top British scientist Sir John Gurdon, who won this year's Nobel Prize for medicine.

"India demands justice, NOW! Victim relapses, next 48 hours crucial" reads the Pioneer headline while The Times of India says "Enough Talk. Let's make women safe".
The Indian Express writes that a man accused of planting bombs on the Samjhauta Express in 2007 has allegedly told investigators that he was part of a group of Hindu extremists who planted bombs at a mosque in Maharashtra's Malegaon town in 2006.
The Tribune writes that police have dropped all charges against Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Shrinivasan whose arrest over a Facebook post criticising shutdown in Mumbai during Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray's funeral had sparked an uproar.
The Times of India reports that India is witnessing a significant reduction in fresh cases of the deadly HIV which have come down by 57%.
The Business Standard and the Hindu have reported the government making it mandatory to have an Aadhar Card and a Bank account for beneficiaries of the direct cash transfer scheme.

Three out of four Heads of States are now using Twitter



The number of Heads of States using the social media network, Twitter to engage with the citizens has gone up by 78 percent in 2012 as compared to 2011. Three out of four Heads of States are now using Twitter accounts. US President Barack Obama is the most watched world leader on Twitter, with 25 million followers. He is followed by Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, with 3.5 million followers. Turkish President Gul Mohammad is placed third in this list. From the West Asia region, UAE President and the Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Mkhtoum is placed ninth in the list of Heads of states followed by Twitter users. These findings have been revealed in the latest report by the US based think tank the Digital Policy Council, DPC.

According to the report, the most-followed woman on the list is the Jordan Queen Rania Al Abdullah ,who used her account as a political channel to represent the viewpoints of the King Abdullah II of Jordan in the past. It says that the Middle East region also saw a rise in the heads of state that joined Twitter. In 2012, five out of the top 15 heads of state using Twitter came from Middle Eastern countries. Arab Spring players such as Libya, Tunisia, and Iraq also had their heads of state adopted Twitter along with Qatar and Afghanistan.

"Cops Swing into Damage Control, Public still Angry" - headlines Hindustan Times.
Papers cover the story of high drama at the residence of former Army Chief Gen. V K Singh in Delhi Cantonment, where an army signals team had gone to reconfigure the telephone exchange and recall two soldiers manning it. "V K Singh's family alleges snooping by Army" - writes the Sunday Tribune.
Quoting official Pakistani sources, the Asian Age reports that Pakistan is all set to grant 'Most Favoured Nation' status to India and the announcement is likely to be made in the week starting Monday. Traders have been assured that some 'sensitive' items would not be allowed from India.

Many leading dailies today have reported on the Apathetic attitude of the police and the public, in an interview given by the friend of the Delhi gang rape victim to a TV news channel. "Rape victims friend appears on TV, slams police, 'apathetic public'" reports the Indian Express. "Three PCRs wasted 30 minutes arguing about jurisdiction" reports the Times of India and adds that the cops did not lift the victim and that her friend had to lift her with his injuries.

The lowering of the age bar for juvenile delinquents from 18 to 16 at a high level meeting has also been highlighted by the newspapers. "Few takers for death penalty; many states want 16 as juvenile age bar", notes the Hindu. The Tribune adds "No consensus on death for rapists".

"While the entire country agitated over the Delhi gang rape, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said, rapes are mainly prevalent in urban India due to western influence and that such crimes do not happen in Bharat - rural areas", reports the Hindu. The Asian Age notes "RSS Boss, BJP draw flak for shockers".

The continuing cold wave in North India finds a mention in major news dailies. "It's close to freezing and there is no respite insight" reports the Hindustan Times. The Times of India notes "Delhi at 2.7 degrees celsius, Gurgaon 0.7 degrees celsius".

Newspapers like the Hindu and the Asian Age have displayed on their front page a photograph of the 15-year old Pakistan activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban last October for advocating girls' education, emerging from the queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on Thursday after she was temporarily discharged.

'Nitin's in again', reads the headline in the Mail Today; the paper adds, 'Gadkari weathers opposition to be firm favorite for second innings as BJP Boss, but will need Modi's backing'.
    Describing as 'untenable' Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's objections to the appointment of Justice R A Mehta as Lokayukta by Governor Kamla Beniwal, The Tribune writes, 'SC upholds appointment of Gujarat Lokayukta; Set back for Modi as court terms his objections unjustified'.
    Referring to the murdered 23 year old woman, The Indian Express writes that exhausted by the endless, unwanted attention, all the fake names thought up by media organizations for her, and the manner in which the horrific tragedy is being made into a spectacle, the harassed family of the victim pleads; 'Just leave us alone'.
    In the case of the alleged sexual assault of a 17 year old South Delhi Public School student, the Times of India writes that the case underlines the perils that social networking sites pose to vulnerable Teenagers. It was a Facebook friendship that pulled the girl into the sordid quagmire. In another report, the paper highlights the new dangers in the lives of net savvy teenagers and a need to sensitize kids and parents about cyber laws and use and abuse of the Internet.

Under "Another chance for us to get it right", Hindustan Times writes that 2012 streaked across our collective vision in a gloomy blur with the exceptionally brutal gang rape and death of a 23 year old Delhi girl and the ensuing nationwide protests being the morbid topping to, by and large, a downer of a year. The Asian Age, under the caption, Let 2013 be Year of the Woman", says that crowds braved cold and police and thronged Jantar Mantar to peacefully demand harsh punishment for crimes against women. The Times of India says that the horrific attack on Nirbhaya has led to a spurt in requests for gun licences from women.
Asia's largest Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom Deoband has banned the use of multimedia mobile phones, saying they were acting on complaints that students were using them for morally unacceptable purposes, reports The Times of India.
Hindustan Times like most prominent newspapers reports that schools across Delhi will start selling nursery admission forms from today, adding that there are 100,000 seats and the demand outstrips supply.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has released the date sheets for classes 10 and 12 board examinations for 2013, reports Hindustan Times, adding that though the date sheets are fairly balanced, schools have been training their children to write back-to-back exams and get used to the pace.
