The Pioneer headline "Surjit savours his Sarabjit moment" very aptly conveys the sentiments of almost all newspapers along with photographs. All papers cover the home coming of Surjit Singh after 31 years in Pakistan jail on charges of  spying. 
The Hindu, Times of India and Indian Express have covered the US Supreme Court's verdict that may virtually hand over President  Barak Obama a second term at the White House. The verdict, upheld a core provision of his landmark health care reform policy, under which every American is mandated to purchase an insurance policy or face penalty.
The governments decision to "look afresh" at the Vodafone retrospective tax has been widely reported by the newspapers. The Indian Express elaborates that in a much needed image makeover, the government intends to put the Vodafone  dispute on a back-burner and focus on macro-economic issues to improve India's image as an investor-friendly destination. 
Syed Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal disclosure on the role of ISI and serving officers of the Pakistani army in the Mumbai terror attack and how the agencies worked to protect their Indian asset has been covered by all leading newspapers.
The filing of nominations for the July 19 Presidential Polls by former Union Minister Pranab Mukharjee and former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, in the Parliament house have got wide coverage by newspapers with photographs of both nominees, along with their respective parties leaders filing their nomination papers.
The Hindustan Times reports that tests have revealed that more than half of the leading soft drinks contains traces of alcohol. The alcohol levels are as low as 10 mg in every litre and is much less than packaged fruit juices that contain 0.1 to 0.5 per cent.
The Times of India reports that by the year end, blood sugar tests could cost just 2 rupees, take about 10 seconds and draw far less blood than the regular glucose meter.

The paper adds that the arrest could reveal IM's links to Pakistan.

The RBI steps to bolster the rupee, is the other big story of the day. 'RBI steps to shore up rupee fail to enthuse market,' writes the Hindu.

Framing of charges against Union Minister Virbhadra Singh and his wife has been adequately covered by the press. 'Enough evidence of corruption, says Judge'; 'BJP, Team Anna seek minister's ouster', writes the Indian Express.

The Hindu and the Statesman have a picture of the 200-year old shrine of Dastageer Sahib in Srinagar, which was gutted yesterday. 'Srinagar tense as Sufi shrine goes up in flames' is the Tribune headline.

Dhaka honour for retired colonel, writes the Asian Age, of Col Ashok Tara, who saved PM Sheikh Hasina and her mother from captivity, 40 years ago.

'Not exactly 100 per cent but almost there', writes the Hindu, of DU admissions, as cut off for coveted courses touches 99 point something per cent.

Striking Air India pilots can breathe a little easy now. 'High Court issues notice to Centre, Air India', reports the Indian Express.

On the sports front - in Wimbledon - Sharapova's win is splashed across the sports pages. Venus Williams' worst Wimbledon defeat in 15 years, In another match, yesterday, is covered prominently. 'Vesnina eclipses Venus' is how the Times of India puts it.

And finally, are you a young mother who is exhausted by the end of the day looking after her baby ? Well, you have reason to be. According to a study, 'toddler's antics for a day equivalent to 83 rounds of boxing,' writes the Times of India.

The tragic conclusion of the rescue operation to save 4 year old Mahi from an open borewell, is covered by most papers. '80 hour rescue effort ends in tears', headlines The Times of India. The paper writes that she died of asphyxia a few hours after she fell into the borewell.
'Lets talk business, border row can wait, Beijing tells Delhi', headlines Hindustan Times. China has pitched for a two -track approach to strengthen bilateral relations with India, advocating patience  in resolving the sticky border dispute and deepening economic and cultural ties. 
The Indian Express writes, 'Government urges PSUs to hike dividend payouts', with a clear message being passed to companies to announce higher dividends.
The Hindustan Times reports that the Government is debating introduction of a new scheme to mobilize foreign exchange deposits from NRIs to steam the rupees slide and boost dollar inflows with global bonds.  
Business line of The Hindu writes, 'Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to penalize errant cable service providers.' Non complaisance with digitisation norms could cost service provider heavy, including prosecution.
'Delhi and Mumbai', writes The Times of India, 'have been chosen for the DRDO's ballistic missile defence system that can be put in place at short notice and strategic planning has already begun'.

Rupee hits fresh low of 57.32, dips over 3% in a week

A big blow to Mamata Banerjee as the high court strikes down the Singur Land Act, is the lead story in the Hindu, the Financial Express and the Tribune. 'Mamata loses Singur land battle in High Court', writes the Hindustan Times.
The rupee plunging to an all time low finds prominence in the business dailies, as well as other papers. 'Rupee hits fresh low of 57.32, dips over 3% in a week', is the Financial Express headline. The Hindu writes, 'Centre moves to halt rupee fall', saying that Pranab Mukherjee has assured that in consultation with the RBI, the Government will take steps to contain the free fall of the currency.
'Mantralaya blaze toll at 5, CM focuses on lost papers', writes the Times of India, about Thursday's blaze in Mumbai. 
'What's cooking in VVIP homes?', asks the Statesman. 'VIP kitchens high on gas', writes Mail Today, adding that politicians consume 30-185 gas cylinders annually, but the common man is allowed only 17.
Trouble in tennis continues. 'Selector flies to UK to coax Paes', is the Times of India headline. 'Pacifying Paes', is how the Statesman puts it.
The 4 year old Gurgaon kid, Mahi, figures in most dailies. 'Digging deep to save her', writes Mail Today. 'Trapped in pit for 48 hours, little Mahi awaits rescue' says the Times of India.
In an Hindustan Times special, 'IIT dissent spreads, 2 more favour own test, now Kharagpur and Bombay may dump Sibal plan', is the paper's headline.
And finally, Planning to buy a car? Well, it seems to be the perfect time to do so. 'Pick your ride, big sale is on', writes the Hindustan Times, on its front page. Auto majors, stuck with more than 3 lakh unsold cars, are on a price slashing spree!

'NDA and left split, Pranab through' under that front page headline, The Indian Express reports that with the votes stacked in his favour,  Pranab Mukherjee appears to become the 13th President of India next month.
According to The Times of India, the Ministry of External Affairs has announced a Passport Mela at 28 Passport Offices across India on Saturdays and Sundays when people can simply walk-in without appointment. 
Yesterday's devastating fire in the Mantralaya, Maharashtra's seat of power, has been covered with pictures, by almost all dailies. 
Hindustan Times reports on its front page that IIT-Delhi has rejected HRD Minister Kapil Sibal's proposal of a single entrance test for all Central engineering institutes, and announced its own entrance examination from next year. 
The Times of India reports that Google has set out to save the world's dying languages. In an alliance with scholars and linguists, the internet powerhouse introduced an Endangered Languages Project website where people can find, share and store information about dialects in danger of disappearing.
The Indian Express quotes a study on suicide mortality wherein more than half the total suicide deaths in women and 40 percent of suicide deaths in men in India occur between the ages of 15 and 29. 
The Financial Express writes that some of the leading news and entertainment broadcasters have been boycotting all government advertisements, protesting the new DAVP policy which makes it mandatory for allocation of 40 percent of the 350 crore rupees of annual government ad spend on regional channels.
Hindustan Times reports Myanmar's pro-democracy campaigner Aung Sang Suu Kyi's remarks in her address to a joint sitting of the British Parliament  that during her 15 years in house arrest it was not just the BBC and other broadcasters that kept her in touch with the world, it was also the music of Ravi Shankar and Mozart. The story's headline reads, 'Nehru's coat kept dad warm, Indian music saw me through.'

Pakistan Supreme Court disqualifying Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani from office, dominates the front pages of most papers. 'Pakistan SC unseats Gilani', is the Hindustan Times lead. The Times of India reports, 'Special Assembly Session today to decide new PM'.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's interview to a daily, in which he argued that the NDA's Prime Ministerial candidate must have secular credentials, is highlighted by most papers. Reading it as an attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Express writes, 'Modi as PM : Nitish issues warning, party talks pull-out'.
Political positionings for the forthcoming Presidential polls, are keenly noticed by the press. On the Shiv Sena's decision, to vote with the UPA, the Mail Today writes, 'Sena shocks and humiliates BJP as it backs Pranab'. The Asian Age highlights the NCP's directive to presidential aspirant P A Sangma as it writes, 'Sangma gets 48 hours to withdraw'.
Differences within Joint Parliamentary Committee probing the 2G spectrum allocation scam over calling the Prime Minister as a witness are prominently noticed. '2G scam : PM as witness demand splits JPC', reports the Hindustan Times. The Hindu writes, 'Congress, BJP spar at JPC meeting'.
The Hindustan Times carries two interesting stories on developments in the world of academia. The paper reports that IIT Kanpur has decided to open an office in the US to recruit quality researchers and academecians to the institute. The other story is about Mitra Dutta, a distinguished engineer-physicist being  named the Vice Chancellor of University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Times of India, in a special story quotes the UN Secretary General's annual report on children and armed conflict as saying that Maoists, particularly in Chattisgarh, recruit and indoctrinate children for children's squads.
And finally, a believe-it-or-not kind of story. Imagine a 'Bitter Gourd' or 'Karela' without its stinging bitterness. The Asian Age reports that a team of Indian and Taiwanese vegetable scientists have developed precisely this variety of bitter gourd.

The other big story is of the Reserve Bank of India keeping its crucial short term lending rate unchanged at 8 percent and turning down the demand for a 0.5 percent cut in the Cash Reserve Ratio. Business Standard writes, 'RBI leaves key rates unchanged, disappoints industry and the market'. 
Global agency Fitch Ratings yesterday lowered India's standing from stable to negative, granting it a BBB grade, reports the Statesman. The Indian Express, quoting Fitch, cites lack of reforms, corruption, high inflation and slow growth. 
'Greece races to form new government', writes the Asian Age, with the broad support, after an election victory by pro-bail out parties, which have eased fears of a Greek Eurozone exit.
Indian Express reports that Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has appointed Defence Minister Prince Salman as the Crown Prince and Heir Apparent. 
'From love all to hate all in Indian Tennis', is a headline in the Pioneer regarding the Indian Tennis Doubles team for the upcoming Olympics. 'Spat gets uglier : Rohan Bopanna, too, won't play with Leander Paes', writes the Times of India. 
The Delhi HC, writes the Hindu, has stayed telecast of an add featuring Amitabh Bachchan for the Emami product Nav Ratna Oil, on a plea by a Delhi based herbal products manufacturer, accusing Emami of maligning its ayurvedic oil-Himgange.
And finally, HT City writes, trust Aamir Khan to go where no other Bollywood star has. With his show Satyameva Jayate making waves, the actor has been invited to the Sansad on Thursday to discuss medical malpractices in detail.

The continuing debate over the Presidential Candidates dominates papers today. The Hindustan Times headline reads, "BJP for Sangma vs Pranab, NDA allies not impressed". The Asian Age writes, "NDA split over Prez Poll, to consult CM's". In addition, the paper quotes Sangma as saying '"I'm still in the race". With regard to the Vice-President's post, The Pioneer says, "Diggy takes dig at Didi, backs Ansari second term", quoting Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh, ruling out a deal with NDA for Vice-President. "Badal not in race for post of Vice President" reports Tribune.
The Times of India also writes "Congress hopes to push FDI in retail after Prez Polls". The Indian Express also reports, "Mamata clout waning, several Congress Chief Minister press for FDI in retail". The paper quotes Delhi CM Shiela Dikshit as saying she would welcome FDI.
On the upcoming G-20 summit, The Asian Age headlines "PM to push G-20 for eurozone "quick fix", so that growth in emerging markets like India is not adversely affected. The Same paper writes "Greek vote looks too close to call", on the crucial election in Greece which could decide whether the country stays in the Eurozone. The Financial Express says, "Greeks vote to decide Euro Future.
Many newspapers report Saina Nehwal's glorious victory at the Indonesia Open, with photographs. The Statesman says 'Saina Nehwal on a golden roll'. The Hindustan Times asks, 'London Next?'
And finally, The Indian Express carries a story on cricketer VVS Laxman, who has not been playing since January, but has to his credit, a cricket club named after him in far-away Yorkshire in England, which seems to be living up 'to its very very special name'.

Referring to the Union Cabinet skipping the discussion over the amendment to be made in the pension Bill,  the Times of India opines "Govt proposes, Mamata disposes' Pension Bill". The Mail Today writes, "Lady Dada strikes again",  while the Pioneer says, "Center bows : Pension Bill on backburner."
Papers report that the new Army Chief, General Bikram Singh has lifted the discipline and vigilance ban imposed on Lt. General Dalbir Singh Suhag, paving the way for his promotion and appointment as Eastern Army Commander.
"Violence Mars Punjab Civic Polls", says the Tribune, writing that the first phase of Civic Polls ended in Punjab yesterday amid reports of violence, booth capturing, rigging and bogus voting.
"Panetta losing patience with Pak", writes the Asian Age, adding that the US defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Pakistan on Thursday that Washington is losing patience over its failure to eliminate safe havens for insurgents who attack US troops in Afghanistan. 
Under the headline, "Sabavala fetches record 22 crore rupees", The Hindustan Times writes that Vespers I, by India's foremost modernist, Jehangir Sabavala sold for a record 253650 pounds at Bonhams annual summer sale of contemporary south Asian "Art on Thursday.
And finally, "Is Airplane headache" real? Yes, writes the Times of India, saying that this unusual, specific head pain, severe usually on one side of the head and near the eye, should now be considered a new sub type of headache as per Italian researchers  who also suggest a list of Criteria, doctors can use to diagnose it.

In a special front page story, the Indian Express exposes a land racket in Bihar in which government officials and brokers ganged up to buy land dirt cheap from villagers and then sold it to the government at four to five times the price. This land was then distributed to the most marginalised of Dalits by the state government.

The Tribune on its front page shows a fisherman casting his fishing net during a heavy shower in Kochi, and writes, "Monsoon on course, to hit Kerala by tomorrow". And people in the North West region can look forward to some respite from the soaring mercury.
"Sun to get a rare beauty spot tomorrow", under that headline the Pioneer writes, that on Wednesday June the 6, India will wake up to a rare phenomenon. When the Sun, Venus and Earth will align in a straight line, giving the Sun a rare beauty spot. The last time this phenomenon happened was way back in 1882.
Hindustan Times in an exclusive writes that the Government is drawing up plans to ease the foreign direct investment norms for the single-brand retail, with the condition that global firms will have to source 30 per cent of their requirement from local small firms and artisans.
And finally, the Times of India writes that in this mango season, eating a few mango varieties could help you lose weight but only if you eat them with the skin which you normally throw away. According to a research, mango skin contains compounds that inhibit formation of human fat cells.

Many papers today report on the symbolic fast at Jantar mantar yesterday by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev in their first joint protest. The Hindustan Times says 'Ramdev, Team Anna share stage, not views'. The Asian age writes  'Ramdev snubs Kejriwal over Anti-PM remarks', while also appealing to the Prime Minister to 'Make Cabinet corruption-free'. The Pioneer headlines it, as 'Rally bares chinks in crusaders'. 
The Tribune reports, the Congress working committee's crucial meeting to be held today will discuss the current political situation and the challenges before the UPA Government, on the economic front. The Asian Age says 'CWC meet today, broad review likely'. The Statesman highlights, the Government is to set up a high-level board  under commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma to boost the manufacturing sector.
The Pioneer carries a story on the New Army Chief, General Bikram Singh planning to take a fresh look at the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, (AFSPA) saying, he may back its partial withdrawal from certain parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The same paper also reports, India along with Latin America and South-East Asian nations, has won the first round in its battle to thwart the World Health Organization's attempts to usurp Intellectual Property Rights power, headlining it as 'WHO attempt to block low-cost drugs stalled'.
The Tribune caries a photograph of India beating Britain in the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament, with the caption 'Consolation bronze win for hockey fans'.

Ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak being sentenced to life in prison is the other lead story in papers "Mubarak gets life in Jail" writes "The Asian Age" while "The Mail Today" says "Condemned -dictator Hosni gets life term."
"Najafgarh MLA shot at; critical " writes "The Pioneer", saying that a day after concern pertaining to security to MLAs was raised in the Delhi Assembly, this incident took place in south west Delhi on Saturday morning. Other papers have also reported the story.

"With 13.1 percent growth, Bihar tops states; Delhi second" is the headline story of the Times of India. Supported with charts and figures , the paper elaborates that Bihar, which was synonymous with poverty, has emerged as the fastest growing state for the second year running, clocking a scorching 13.1% growth in 2011-12. Bihar's economy today is bigger than Punjab, which until now was the preferred destination of Bihari migrant workers.
Close on the heels of the bleak disclosure that the country's economy is well and truly under the weather, here are more bad tidings. According to Mail Today, Monsoon Trauma is Underway! The much awaited southwest monsoon has failed to keep its Friday date with Kerala. More serious than a slight delay in the onset is its likely dilution towards the end because of rain-buster phenomenon El Nino.

The Asian Age under the headline Naveen Patnaik Punishes 5 for Coup Plot states that taking tough action against the dissidents who allegedly planned to topple the government three days ago, BJD President Biju Patnaik dismissed two ministers and suspended three senior leaders including his erstwhile adviser Pyarimohan Mohapatra from the party. The Pioneer also covers the same on its front page with the headline "Naveen Goes On a Rampage"   
And Finally, according to The Times of India, Australian researchers have found that eating a block of dark chocolate daily over ten years has "significant" benefits for high-risk cardiac patients and could prevent heart attacks and strokes. For that to happen one needs to take 100 grams of dark chocolates with 70% or higher cocoa content, everyday!

Almost all newspapers have carried on their front page the nose dive of the economic growth, to a nine year low. The Times of India headline reads "Economy gasps as Q4 growth, sputters to 5.3%" The Pioneer headline aptly reads "Growth story goes awry, GDP plunges to 5.3%. The Economic Time elaborates-with the currency in decline, wobbly markets, soaring deficits and growth at 9 year low-it is time to say goodbye 2020 and hello 1991.
Most news papers have also carried the Union cabinets nod to the New Telecom policy 2012 on their front pages. The Tribune writes Govt. rings in free roaming. New Telecom Policy - no more roaming says the Asian Age. The Hindu applauds the NTP 2012 for allowing number portability and abolishing roaming charges.
The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has recommended a CBI probe into the misuse of coal blocks allocated to some companies reports the Hindustan Times under the headline CVC forwards coal blocks case to CBI.
"Booked out of Jet, Expat Pilots may land at strike-hit Air India" reads The Economic Times headline. With this, the stricken national career is attempting to restore some semblance of normalcy to its crippled international operations and improve financial performance to meet the milestones set by the government as a condition for the Rs.30,000 crore bailout package.
Senior BJP leader Lal Krishan Advani has created a flutter within party circles by claiming that the mood within the party these days in not upbeat, and has called for introspection. The veteran leader is critical of BJP's decision to embrace a scam-tainted BSP Minister ahead of Uttar Pradesh Poll besides the poor handling of the Karnataka & Jharkahand affairs. The story has been carried in the Pioneer and The Asian Age.
